Enter the mesmerizing world of

Rabindrasangeet

Founded in 1979, Prangan needs little introduction amongst Rabindrasangeet enthusiasts in Mumbai and Kolkata. Affiliated to ‘Rabitirtha’ in Kolkata, which was founded by the legendary Late Smt. Suchitra Mitra, Prangan has made sincere efforts to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers to propagate the unifying message of Tagore’s works, in Mumbai over the past 45 years. The Founders, Smt. Debjani Ray and (Late) Smt. Sunanda Majumdar, later joined by (Late) Smt. Shukla Mitra, have created a legacy being taken forward by their disciples, in continuing Rabindrasangeet classes and shows in true to Prangan tradition. From a single branch to many across Mumbai and having students from across India joining through its online classes, Prangan is making a significant impact in instilling love for Rabindrasangeet, across  generations.

    Our lineage

Over the years Prangan not only focuses on imparting knowledge of Rabindrasangeet but also has staged more than a 100 performances in Mumbai, Kolkata and in the United Kingdom.

Prangan has had the privilege of several eminent artists performing during it’s many shows. The doyenne of Rabindrasangeet Smt. Suchitra Mitra has performed on multiple occasions from 1981 to 2005. Several other art and music personalities like Soumitra Chatterjee, Dwijen Mukherjee, Purba Dam, Pramita Mallick, Tapas Sen, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Hema Malini, Aparna Sen, Bhupinder and Mitali Singh, Joy Sengupta, Shobhaa De, Pradip Ghosh, Shaoli Mitra, Shounak Chatterjee, Vid. Kaushiki Chakraborty, Raghab Chatterjee and several others have performed on Prangan stage.

As part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2004, Prangan also had an extremely successful and critically acclaimed musical tour of the UK, produced in conjunction with the University of Westminster.

Prangan has also actively sought to collaborate with other institutions seeking to propagate the works of Tagore within communities. In 1999, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Prangan organised a musical evening, providing a platform to over 8 cultural organisations in Mumbai. Again in 2004, during Prangan’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, it invited other leading Tagore institutions in Mumbai to participate jointly in a musical programme – “Robi-Pronaam” – the first of its kind in the city.

Along the way, Prangan has paid homage to Tagore by releasing two music CDs – Rabi Malika (launched by Smt. Suchitra Mitra in 2003) and Milan Swarga (launched by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Westminster in 2006). It is a matter of pride that two songs from Rabi Malika were subsequently included into another CD album called Robi Ragini, released by SaReGaMa on the occasion of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary. Prangan also launched a book called “Tagore Lineage: Some Glimpses” during its silver jubilee celebrations in 2004, in order to show case the artistic and literary excellence of many illustrious members of Tagore’s family.
